He had two season tickets and I still remember the afternoon when the tickets would arrive in the mail. I would open the package and stare at the colors and the helmets on all the tickets that were attached together in one large sheet. My Dad would go to games with my Uncle Terry, but starting in 1968, when I was 7, I was able to pick one or two games to attend when the tickets arrived. My first game was against the then Boston Patriots during the 68 season. My Dad had this thing about parking (in that he refused to pay for it) so we would park in some neighborhood in Queens that he and my Uncle had found and then walk what seemed liked 10 miles to me as a kid to get to the Stadium. On the way, we would stop at the Mets Lounge, an orange and dodger blue colored bar, where my Dad would have a beer or two and I would get a soda and sit at the bar with him.
I saw some great games growing up, although after 69 the Jets were mostly horrible. Al Woodall?! Bob Davies?! Ed Bell?! One of my favorite memories was seeing the Jets play the 49ers during one of the seasons Namath was hurt. The papers said Namath could play, but that he was third on the depth chart. At the start of the game, Woodall got hurt, and then Davies went down with an injury. The crowd went wild as Namath came into the game, where he proceeded to throw three TD passes to get the Jets back in the game. He was intercepted on the last play of the game to ruin the comeback (this is Namath we're talking about after all), but it was still a great memory, jumping up and down with my Dad as Namath brought back the Jets.
On Halloween, when I was 15, I decided to go out Trick or Treating one last time with my little brother. Not having a costume, I found my Dad's old Stadium Jacket, the one he used to wear to the cold weather games, and I put it on as part of my hobo costume. As I put on the coat, I felt something in the pocket, and pulled out the ticket stub from the 1968 AFL Championship Game between the Jets and the Radiers at Shea. My Dad and Uncle had gone to that game in the freezing cold. It must have been the last time he had worn the jacket. I still have that ticket stub.
When the Jets moved to Giants Stadium, my Dad refused to re-order his tickets, even though the games in East Rutherford would be much closer to our house in Fair Lawn than Shea.
With the Jets success this year, my Dad and I have been thinking back on those great trips to Shea on early sunday mornings, just a young boy and his Dad, together and having a great time.
I know that I still watch Pro Football because of those trips to Shea.Tom Carroll (St. Albans School)noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980010523927297374.post-69060729539944914332010-01-18T17:40:43.210-05:002010-01-18T17:40:43.210-05:00To sanford: I have been a Bears fan since 1957. ...To sanford: I have been a Bears fan since 1957. Down here in Louisiana, the CBS NFL telecast was the Bears, with Lindsey Nelson and Red Grange. Grange was super. He said that he would never criticize a player during the game, because people just could not realize how hard palying in the NFL was. What a gentleman, and a legend. Rick Caseras, Harlon Hill, Bill George, Doug Atkins, etc. Two championships in over 50 years...pretty meager. Even with the Saints' success, I AM A bear!Georgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04053773471088615196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980010523927297374.post-85603196752630529652010-01-18T12:46:38.224-05:002010-01-18T12:46:38.224-05:00John I am a Chicago Bears fan. An organization that can't recognize or develop talent.

I am a bit older than you and I am a pacer as well. At least I am when the season is going well and the game is on the line. There hasn't been much pacing for me the last few years as the Bears have been just terrible.sanfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06580867647162091670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980010523927297374.post-50149590546568625062010-01-18T12:30:11.395-05:002010-01-18T12:30:11.395-05:00Man, what a boring NFL playoff season so far. Outside of the Cards-Packers game, and I guess you can say the Jets since they've got two upsets, its been ho-hum in blow-out fashion.

Maybe next weekend changes things.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
