Certainly the myth of "a mid-major can't win the NCAA tournament" would be busted wide open. True, as you point out Butler is no fluke and has been an NCAA tournament mainstay for years. But a non-BCS-football school taking the crown? You'd have to go back to 1990 (UNLV) to find a team that doesn't play BCS football, 1985 (Nova) to find a team that doesn't sponsor FBS football, and 1977 (Marquette, when they were a member of the Horizon League) that doesn't sponsor football at all. In a world where BCS schools are rumored to be trying to shut out the Horizon Leagues from getting at-large teams into the tournament, the effect of this at this point in history could be incredible.Chuck B '92https://www.blogger.com/profile/01908569300580779656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980010523927297374.post-77024577595452791042010-03-29T11:42:23.988-04:002010-03-29T11:42:23.988-04:00John,

While the teams that made the Final Four are 'talented,' this isn't the year that the teams are dominated by potential NBA All-Star players.

All the teams still standing have one thing in common - solid team ball. Michigan State, Butler, Duke and West Virginia are, for all intents and purposes, teams that could play in any era, against anyone. There are no tricks in what they do, or single players carrying them through.

To me, this is the Final Four (and tourney) of the 'purists.'Timnoreply@blogger.com
