I don't doubt that when Jimbo Fisher got this deal a couple of years ago, he was interviewing, or at least getting buzz, for head coaching jobs around the southeast. But to make him the automatic roll-over coach in waiting, they failed to acknowledge that the FSU situation could have been asking for something different when the time came for Bowden to leave.

If its so important to get Bowden out, not on his term but the schools, then it seems something close to a housesweeping is in store. Having grown up in northwest Florida, I am...John,
Having grown up in northwest Florida, I am old enough to remember the state of FSU football when Bobby Bowden arrived in 1976. I don't think people understand the magnitude of his accomplishment in making FSU a national powerhouse. Back in the 1970's, the thought that FSU could regularly compete with the best programs in the nations was almost laugheable. It was Bowden's personality that generated the alumni/booster support necessary to build the program to the level it achieved in the 1990's. Having said that, I have to reluctantly say that letting him go was probably the right decision. For whatever reason, it appears his staff was becoming dysfunctional, with old time loyalists like Mickey Andrews and Chuck D'Amato bumping heads with Jimbo Fisher. I agree with you on the silliness of the whole "Coach in Waiting" deal, and have my doubts as to whether or not Fisher is the right guy for the job. There is no doubt, however, that Bowden is one-of-a-kind, and I will miss him on the sidelines, even if Fisher is the next coming of Knute Rockne. Love your books and your columns and I'm glad to hear your recovery from surgery is going well.

Tom Williamson
USNA '85Tom Williamsonnoreply@blogger.com
