As ...Hell, Feinstein, you've got me crying now! As a dad of a Navy grad and a present Mid, I can tell you that the devotion of service men and women to each other is what makes these kids, players and students, special. They do it for their team-mates just like they'll do it for their squad-mates in a year or 2. At Navy, the companies do a "de-briefing" every night and finish by singing "Navy Blue and Gold". Can you imagine how a grad feels when he hears that song and knows that some of his alumni pals from Academy days having given their LIVES to support them, their shipmates and their country? Civilian colleges and their parents cannot fathom the feelings, the worry, the pain or the pride. It is so strong that not even the BCS and Bill Hancock can co opt it. The purity of the Midshipmen and the Cadets is a truly American tradition. For one week each has its goal of beating the other. Then the other 51 one weeks they defend our country together.

What an incredibly sobering thing to see on the player profiles "service selection".

What a sad comment on me that I know Cam Newtons name and the fact he was arrested for breaking and entering and I DO NOT know any of the Army or Navy players names or their service selections. SHAME ON ME!

Army Navy is truly one of Americas great sports traditions. We all can only hope that it stays as pure as it is now and always has been. I remember my father a NAVY pilot in WW II telling me how on NAVY ARMY game day, his description, everyone on the ship sat around radios and listened. The game still has innocence and purity. Lets hope its never changes.

I agree with one of the other posters Vern Lundquist and Gary Danialson and CBS are horrible but at least its not on ESPN! Seeing Lee Corso in a military mascot uniform would be tanamount to treason.Gordonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980010523927297374.post-11872920787084773132010-12-14T09:11:52.211-05:002010-12-14T09:11:52.211-05:00Great post. I have in-laws that are USNA and USMA graduates living in the DC metro and they are all geeked up to have everyone go. I'd love to see the pageantry and game up close, but I recognize DarkHeart for what he is and don't want to put any of my money in his pockets.

If he changed the name of his NFL team, I'd be there in a second.

Just the voice of one Choctaw wishing his country could get past making money off of mocking a disempowered electorate.

Also wishing I had the coin to buy the Custer guidon and burn it on the steps of the Capitol.

The Taters are an embarrassment on the field and to the peoples they supposedly "honor".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980010523927297374.post-20929708468372956442010-12-13T19:09:09.563-05:002010-12-13T19:09:09.563-05:00Thank you John for recognizing not only the footba...Thank you John for recognizing not only the football players at the academies but the other 7,800+ that don't play in the Army/Navy Game yet still derive a satisfaction that only Cadets and Midshipmen fully can appreciate. As the proud parent of a Midshipman whose service selection is Marine Corps Pilot, I can tell you that hearing Navy Blue & Gold one last time was a very poignant moment for my wife and me. Our daughter knows what she has ahead of her upon graduation this coming May and she looks forward to it willingly because as she said to me, "Dad, I want to make a difference. That's why I chose the Academy and that's why I chose Marine Corps Air." But I couldn't help but note that Saturday exhibited the best and worst of NCAA football. First was the class and sportmanship of Army-Navy, followed later in the evening by the corruption surrounding the Heisman Trophy presentation and winner. I too have had the privilege of being on the field when the alma maters are played, once after our Navy team won at the buzzer. There is truly nothing like it. CBS royally screwed up the delivery of it this year, but that's television.

Anyone who doesn't think it's the greatest sporting event there is has never been to the game. While sitting on the couch with my kids, I explained why this game matters even though I never served. I always watch the game and root for Navy because my grandfather served in the Navy.

Still, when I see the midshipmen in their navy blue pea coats and the cadets in their gray coats, I am reduced to a pile of emotional jelly.

Hell, the dust in my office is really flying right now.

It was, as usual, a terrific game. About 10 minutes into the game, having suffered enough of Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson, I finally got smart and went to the internet to tune in your radio broadcast.
