John's Monday Washington Post Article...

Here is my column today for The Washington Post ------

Remember back in school when you were doing footnotes for a term paper and you would simply write: "ibid," when you were referencing the same source material and didn't need to repeat that which you had already written.

That would probably work well today, re: Redskins, Washington and Terrapins, Maryland.

Except now full panic has broken out.

A week ago, the Redskins got booed en route to a less-than-impressive victory over the St. Louis Rams. The Terrapins received similar treatment while somehow losing for a second year in a row to Middle Tennessee.

Both coaches -- Jim Zorn, after 18 games, and Ralph Friedgen, after 103 -- were being questioned and doubted.

JOHN, WHEN YOU MENTIONED GIBBS AND BEATHART..YOU FORGOT RICHIE PETTIBON..WHO WAS JUST AS IMPORTANT IN THEIR SUCCESS. I NEVER SAW ANYONE WHO COULD MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO A DEFENSE..AT HALF TIME..AND COME BACK OUT, AND SHUT THE OPPONENT DOWN.

Interesting column. I live out West so I don't live and die by D.C. football, but it makes me a bit sad to hear Zorn getting ripped by Tony and others calling for his head. He was the Seahawks' first quarterback and he'll always have a special place in Northwest hearts.

As a fan of the Carolina Panthers I think the importance of a GM is critical. Most of the problems that the Panthers are enduring right now are a product of poor personnel moves- i.e. signing Delhomme to a five-year $40 million extension after he singlehandedly eliminated Carolina from the playoffs last year. And the Peppers debacle has not been dealt with and he's likely going to walk for free this year. All the money spent on retaining Pep for a franchise season forced the Cats to let three valuable lineman walk and now we can't block all of the sudden. Big surprise! Anyway, nice article John...
