Tuesday Night Update

We checked in with John's brother Bob this afternoon at the hospital. He said "John is getting back to his normal cranky self. He is out of ICU and has seen family, has had a few visitors and is on the road to recovery."

Thanks to all of you who have left your best wishes with John. The Doctors will probably not allow him to get on the computer for a few days, but we will make sure that he sees all of your comments. We'll update you again tomorrow, as we try to continue to fill this space in our pinch-hitting role, while John is on the DL. We hope he is back and swinging from the heels soon.

Please be sure to update him on the Natinals: they continue to stink...STINK....and it looks like Manny is not going anywhere. And Wilbon scored a great interview with Tiger at Congressional.

Get well my friend. You won't remember me, but I graduated from Duke in 1978, lived in Wannamaker, and have followed your career ever since. You make us Dukies proud. You are in our prayers and best wishes. Get well quickly. I still need you to autograph one of your books for me. Stay healthy. Regards, Jamie Campbell

Best wishes from our family for a speedy recovery. As a fellow Dukie, I have enjoyed introducing my children to your writing -- my 11 year old son is eager to read Change Up when it is released in August. We will keep you in our prayers.

Get well soon! I have always enjoyed your commentary on NPR and your basketball writing. Best of luck!

Our best wishes for you, John. I've read all your books, and as a Duke alum myself, you represent the school well...aside from your call for cutting the football program. Obviously, that was misguided.

All the best for a speedy recovery and return to writing and analyzing the sports landscape.

Funny his family jokes that he's cranky. I think he embodies humanism in his writing above anyone else in the sports realm. Get well soon, John.

I have the greatest of empathy for anyone who spends time in ICU. My closest connection to you is as the ICU patient who Larranaga came to visit as you documented in your wonderful column on why he chose to stay at Mason. Never thought I'd ever make a Feinstein column or the Washington Post Sports section!! All the trials associated with a very long hospitalization was (almost!) worth it!

I look forward to all of your future columns, especially the ones on mid-major basketball, especially the Mason-related ones!

Take care.

Best of luck in your recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with you. You were always someone I looked forward to talking with, and hope to do so again very soon. Best wishes

John: I just got an e-mail from Tim Finchem passing along his best wishes.
We sure picked a good time to start this blog so all of your friends and fans can post their greetings. I know they are all anxious for you to get better so you can resume blogging. I will call your brother again this afternoon so we can update the blog tonight or tomorrow. Also, for the record and to answer a question I have heard from a few folks; we selected the blog title of ON THE BRINK weeks ago and before all of this transpired. We can have a dark sense of humor on occasion; but not on this one. Hurry back, buddy.

It's amazing what some people will do to draw attention to their brand new blog!!

Hey there, Professor, I'm sorry to hear this news, but I'm glad to know that you are doing well and on the mend. I look forward to seeing your cranky self in a press room somewhere soon. Oh, and in case your mind was a little fuzzy coming out of surgery, allow me to assure you that it was not just a dream. Barack Obama really is President.

From your second-favorite student (next to Svrluga).

John: How incredible that the day I log onto your blog (for the first time) I read about your impending surgery. Deepack Chopra would call that awesome synchronicity!!! Anyway, my prayers and thoughts are with you. I am sure you will be swimming in a few weeks.

I went on vacation for a few days after discovering your blog last week. .I just got back this afternoon and sat down to catch up and just read this news. You are a lucky guy they caught this now; my Dad was not back in '98. I am really going to enjoy checking in on you every few days and I hope you get better and can come back real soon. I still miss you on Sports Reporters, but this is not a bad substitute. My son got me your book on Roco
Mediaite and I am going to start reading it tonight.
